What You Need To Know About Murphy Beds
Brief History
The reason they are called Murphy Beds is because of the man who created the first one more than a century ago. In San Francisco in the late 1890s, William L. Murphy invented the Murphy Bed to make his studio apartment socially acceptable for female visitors. Murphy was in love with a beautiful opera singer and wanted to spend more time with her. However, because of his one-room walk-up apartment, he had a problem. In those days women would not go into a man’s bedroom and his apartment was only one room — with a bed in it. So he created a disappearing bed. This enabled him to spend time with the woman — who he eventually married.Murphy Bed Or Wall Bed?
Is there a difference between the two? Yes. There is more to it than just a couple of terms that are interchangeable. The biggest difference between the two is the lifting mechanism. We’ll get to those in a minute. But first, here are some more ways the styles are different. With Wall Beds, there is no gap near the headboard where your pillow may fall down — a very popular feature for our customers. Wall Beds can also hold about double the weight of a Murphy Bed. Both styles are delivered disassembled. Murphy Beds come in smaller pieces so they are easier to deal with to maneuver through a small space in your home. Wall Beds are easier and faster to assemble. We offer a lifetime warranty on both mechanisms. What Sizes
In addition to the storage, shelves, desks, and more that make Murphy Beds so beneficial, they also come in a variety of sizes. The most popular size is Queen, but most manufacturers can build any standard size, including XL’s. Because of this, virtually any room in your home can be transformed into a multi-functional space. Here’s a little more on our available sizes.- Twin — This is ideal for a child or small space in your home or office that only requires room for one adult.
- Queen — This is what you probably want for two adults to sleep comfortably. This is recommended for a bed that you are planning to use every night.
- King — Anybody with space for a king-size Murphy Bed will appreciate the variety that is available in our Studio Series.
